Do you know about the OCBD?

Oxford Cloth Button Down

Four letters that combine to create one of the most iconic pieces in menswear, the Oxford Cloth Button Down. Just take a stroll through the endless menswear blogs or down the street and we guarantee you’ll see a version of the OCBD. It’s the quintessential “sport” shirt.

The story starts back in the 19th Century when a British mill created a fabric specifically for Oxford University that was both durable and comfortable – the “Oxford Cloth.” One of the Brooks brothers, on a visit across the pond, noticed the English polo players wearing these oxford cloth shirts with buttons on the collar, which kept their collars from flipping up during a match. Long story short, they brought this stylish idea back to America and the OCBD was created. This shirt style eventually gained popularity within tennis clubs. The fabric was formal enough to wear for a match (tennis gear was a bit different back then), yet durable and breathable from the looser weave of the fabric. It didn’t take long for this shirt to hit the Ivy League campuses, which is where the OCBD really took off into the style we know today. Think of a light blue Oxford cloth button down worn with a navy blazer, Repp tie, khaki chinos and Weejuns – the Classic Ivy League style.

You’ll find Oxford cloths in many forms these days, even in updated fabrications and weaves like Pinpoint Oxfords, Luxury Oxfords, etc., but the original Oxford cloth is uncompromised for its traditional feel and style. Although mostly, if not always, seen in a button down collar style, this is a shirt that you can wear with a suit during the week, and then with a pair of shorts on the weekend; speaking to the versatility of the Oxford cloth and the ease of incorporating our Tessitura Monti Oxford Cloths into your daily wardrobe this fall.

Blue Oxford

Staying true to the tradition of the OCBD, the Blue Oxford is a classic choice. Wear it with anything and everything. A navy twill suit, a cotton deconstructed jacket, or keep it even more classic with a Navy Hopsack blazer and a khaki 5-pocket for a Business Casual look at the office.

Brown Oxford

Menswear is ever changing, thus a classic style like the OCBD naturally can take other forms; enter the Brown Oxford. A neutral, easy-to-wear color in a durable and versatile Oxford cloth is a great version of the OCBD. Create a monochromatic look with a Brown Heather Herringbone Deconstructed Suit for a casual yet elegant look this Fall.

Green Oxford

And last but certainly not least, the OCBD gets a modern touch in color and style. The Green Oxford gives you an entirely new look in an oxford. Don’t be scared of the color, green is easy to wear, and pairs naturally with all shades of blue and grey which every guy has in their wardrobe. We like it here with the Navy & Brown Multi Check from Reda, which has just a hint of green that ties in the Green Oxford but evens out the look with brown and navy. Keep the look even more modern by opting for a Modern Button Down style collar – staying true to the BD but in a new way.
