Getting Your Shorts Right

In the time that we are in, weekends and workdays can often flow into one another, and we may have forgotten, but we have unofficially kicked off summertime after this seemingly eternal spring of 2020. With our new working from home, semi-permanent status and the likelihood of getting back outdoors as things start to slowly open up, there is nothing as comfortable and stylish as a quality pair of custom-made shorts. Most guys would aimlessly pull on a pair of shorts without thinking as a summer staple or as an easy key item. But a great pair of tailored shorts can be a true discovery, replacing that dated pair you have been pulling out from the back of your closet each season.

Shorts as we know them today were initially adopted by British military stationed in Africa and Asia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries – with these early versions modeled on the uniform of the Nepalese Gurkhas. Over the decades, shorts have passed from the military to sporting and leisure pursuits, but by the 1950s, shorts had become acceptable attire at some of America’s country clubs. Since then, not much has changed with the short from the 1960s through today.

For such a relatively simple garment (chinos, but shorter), it’s surprising how much anxiety wearing shorts can provoke. First, there is the question of length, of finding the perfect spot between the knee and the thigh to your preference. Of late, we have seen the need for a tailored look with the option of a slightly narrower opening and a length that hits at the top of your kneecap.

We have added numerous pocket options, waistband and closure options to give you the widest range possible in configuring with your personal stylist, the perfect short. Once you have found your short, try it in different colors and fabrications because finding a well-fitting short in different colors enables you to wear them in many different ways. We offer stretch compact cottons, refined twills and Italian cotton-linen blends, not least our tech-performance fabric which is the perfect fabric for on and off the golf course.

Added to this we have recently introduced a new compact jersey that combined with a comfort waistband option, will give you a short that rivals any workout pair you may have.

Combining knits and polos to shorts should be your go go-to summer uniform and it’s easy to combine. I always like a modern tone-on-tone look with a short such as navy on navy or black on black. But also think black and white or navy and white, which opens up the endless combinations of any short color with white polo or shirt will work through summer, including any shade of khaki.

Wearing shorts with a tucked-in shirt and belt, I think looks really good and appropriate when invited to a daytime occasion outdoors during summer. Working with your Stylist, you can now add an un-tucked profile to shirts with a small adjustment to combine perfectly an un-tucked shirt with your shorts this summer, its more relaxed but great for those hotter days.
