Refined Casual

The new fall collection seems to capture the season so perfectly through coloration, textures, patterns and, indeed, the fabric qualities themselves selected from our mill partners from around the world.

Our tailoring and suits, in particular, have stood the test of time and most clients, established or new, find that a custom-made suit is something they may already know of, though they certainly find an incredible value at J.Hilburn offering the world’s best fabrics at a fraction of comparable tailors. Our Clients may not always be aware that this same process is used in our casual part of the collection, sourcing and curating incredible cloths for casual pieces that can be exceptionally fitted and styled to you and your lifestyle.

I started this season talking about the sportscoat as one of the most versatile pieces in a man’s wardrobe, sitting firmly in the exact middle of tailoring and casual. More than ever, adding a tailored sportscoat in rich fabrications to a casual ensemble has become a symbol of not only impeccable taste but also shows that the wearer understands the “in the know” style of the modern mix between tailoring and refined casual pieces, borrowed entirely from our European cousins’ way of dressing.

Our Casual pieces at J.Hilburn are more Italian-inspired. When I say that, I mean that the word casual itself has always been a little confusing to me, as casual for most Europeans and in particular for Italians is thought of as jeans and tee shirts, sweatshirts, and sneakers. Their word for what we in America know as casual is “Sportswear,” for them which, funnily enough, was inherited from brands like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren in the 80’s to describe the type of clothes you would wear on a yacht or on the side of a polo field: refined and elegant. Today, brands like Loro Piana and Brunello Cuccinelli, not least Hermes, all play in this high-demand sector of Luxury Sportswear. Footwear brands like Tods pioneered exceptionally well-made loafers and car shoes back in the 80s as this new sector expanded with wealthy clients finding these brands in places like St. Tropez, Capri, and St. Barts first before the global expansion into all the major cities over the following decades.

Outside of their handmade suits from Scaraceni Roma, icons like Agnelli, Luca di Montezemolo, and the Italian sports stars of the time, all gravitated towards this timeless weekend attire, stepping away from known designer brands of the time with the appeal of heritage and lifestyle seeming more tasteful that gaudy logo driven designers. Fast forward to today, the name of “quiet luxury” has been given this casual category in the 2020’s, which I am perfectly fine with knowing that the quality of make and the tasteful combinations are better suited to describe our casual assortment at J.Hilburn. These include Shirt Jackets, Vests, Windstopper, Hybrid Blazers, and every pant that we offer. Our zip neck styles, polos and yes, even our tees are all made in an exceptional way focused on quality, built uniquely to fit the client one piece at a time. Even when I think of our most casual pieces, such as custom-made Pacific wash denim or a custom-made white tee, I can only see them dressed up with other stylish pieces, such as our tailoring or combined with elegant accessories, such as a custom-made belt in alligator.

In a world of menswear where competitors love to hero items like they are going to revolutionize menswear with a short with built-in underwear or a stretch pant that won’t crush your b..lls (their words, not mine) or, my favorite, a shorter shirt to wear untucked. At J.Hilburn, we hope you are with us on this journey for clothes that fit you perfectly and how you want them to fit so you can effortlessly build your wardrobe season after season, without gimmicks or trends but hopefully with good taste and style that reflects you and your lifestyle.
