With seasonal collections taking center stage, we can often forget about our Essential Collection of suiting. At J.Hilburn, we refer to our Essentials as what others may call the basics, but as a custom-made menswear brand, I think that calling this important part of our collection Essentials rather than basics speaks to how to build a man’s wardrobe around some of these true must-haves. We have expanded our essentials in recent years to cover all categories, giving Clients the opportunity to find these items available at any given time of year. I wanted to focus on our suiting as it can often be overlooked, but for both new and established J.Hilburn Clients, keeping suiting covered in 3 different colors, I find, is a fundamental of every well-dressed man. At J.Hilburn, we offer suiting at different price points so that these menswear must-haves, from a first suit purchase to a connoisseur of style, are accessible to every Client.
The Navy Suit – Navy works for most occasions, from weddings as a guest to the groom, more formal events, and business attire. It has a smart elegance that is at home in most circumstances. With endless ways to style, navy as a color can be seen as traditional, but playing around with styling options such as linings and accessories can add personality to suit every type of Client. The Italians love their Navy suits and will have them in multiple fabrics from flannel wools in winter to refined wools for the rest of the year and a linen version for the summer heat. Navy does come in shades too, which helps create a range for Clients that can seem similar but can actually offer subtle variance that is part of all good menswear style. |

The Grey Suit Perhaps the most overlooked suit, as grey has always been associated with serious business. It may not be the first color that man thinks of, but after Navy, it should be part of his wardrobe as a good alternative, particularly if a mid grey is selected rather than too dark a charcoal. Cary Grant, with his steely looks, always looked particularly handsome in grey and with either white or pale blue shirts; grey suiting is a must-have for every stylish man, as far as I am concerned. Grey for weddings can look fresh, especially with white shirts and paler neckwear, and lighter grey in particular is a lovely go-to choice for grooms and groomsmen, working well with pastel tones and bridalwear. |

The Black Suit Funerals and somber occasions aside, the Black suit is another must-have for every modern gent. I immediately think of Tom Ford and 50s movie stars when I think of a Black suit with a particularly stylish and sharp silhouette that can be very becoming for every size and fit. The black suit can be seen as too serious for work, but for dinners, formal events, and those somber occasions, a black suit should be part of a man’s wardrobe line-up. He may not need one for every season, but a good, refined wool should do the job for year-round wear. He will definitely have an occasion to wear it. |
