Building on the Past

Yesterday, to accompany the launch of the new Spring Summer Collection, we were treated to a 75-degree sunny high here in Dallas that seemingly swept away the short Texas winter. A nice omen as we kick off the new season particularly for a collection that was built for the sunshine.

Our clients appreciate the early access to the season, which helps them plan ahead for occasions and needs and adds to their wardrobe with thoughtful and deliberate purchases. Whilst each season, we bring newness to him, this doesn’t make past seasons irrelevant and obsolete the way other fashion brands choose, but on the contrary, we believe that his 12-month wardrobe should last well beyond a mere season and indeed a year for timeless well -built clothes that fit him and his lifestyle better than any off-the-rack clothes ever could.

The new season palette is designed to delight and inspire our clients, helping them add new pieces that we know will work back to past seasons, colors, and styles. My inspiration for color this season was via a sense of mid-century modern design that has become timeless within itself with current modern design influenced by the mid-century greats, Van Der Rohe, Johnston, and Eames, to mention a few. Added to this  backdrop, i was finding myself really enjoying some of the early 60’s music of of the musicians of the time from Motown, Folk, and Pop. I read somewhere that to pave the way to the future, you need to have a foot in the past, and this philosophy has always been part of my own design ethos, taking inspiration from art, design, and music. This season, I was fresh from trips to Palm Springs and California that had prompted this irresistible retro feeling.

The collection’s inspirational color journey starts with new blues that are as deep as oceans and as light as clouds, with moody shades of “greyed” blues offset at times by natural greens. I also explored the use of Black as a spring color, playing off cream and a new warm natural I am calling “Cookie.” Using Black in a fresh way and sometimes only as an accent in accessories is one of those styling codes that feels both in the past and the present. We then move into more optimistic colors of Californian inspiration, brighter pinks, greens, and indeed brighter blues that feel like baculite or colored glass you could find in a mid-century home. Some of the quirkier combinations show up in sportscoat patterns and shirt prints with natural, gold, and brown juxtapositioned off pinks, greens, and teal. And lastly, a soft, mellow palette of almost sun-washed tones centered around a soft white color I am calling magnolia.

Color is a great way to offer newness to clients without them having to struggle through ever-changing styles and indeed fit that you could find in off-the-rack seasonal collections; for this reason, our client favorite suiting and casual qualities all have updated color selections in the new wearable palettes.

Added to our lineup in suiting, we have added new Marzotto qualities this season, the Italian mill that is also a group textile powerhouse, and from Cerruti, another legacy mill with superb quality and style synonymous with the best Milanese taste.

Our 4-way stretch pant comes in new colors that should take clients all the way through to the summer days and, of course, can be styled into the perfect golf pants or shorts if needed. Denim has a new member to the line-up based on a cleaner version of the Trinity wash, and Americano, our casual stretch cotton pant, is back in a new range of colors. In knits, take a moment to discover our two sand-washed updates in new colors for spring and summer polos with an irresistible hand feel.

More to come about all the newness and highlights in the coming weeks as the season kicks into gear, but I did want to remind you about the enormous effort to simplify our pricing into tiers at the beginning of the year and particularly remove barriers of entry for new clients coming from ready-to-wear competitors. Having custom-made clothing from J.Hilburn has never been more accessible for all to build a timeless wardrobe that suits him and his lifestyle each new season building on the last.
