Simon’s Picks: 7 Ideas for Holiday Outfitting

With the holidays firmly underway, lockdowns behind us and the desire to celebrate with our loved ones, the holiday social life seems to be alive and kicking once again. With so many good reasons to see friends, spend time with loved ones and generally celebrate the season, stylish outfitting can be a challenge when you want to step out in style, but have perhaps not socialized in quite some time.

With this in mind I have put together a few personal looks that I know would work for my own occasions this holiday. One set of looks is geared toward more casual moments: holiday brunches, family dinners at home and the like. For these looks, I’ve focused on Reda knits as the theme. The other group of outfits uses sportcoats for those occasions when a guy wants to be a bit more dressed up, perhaps for drinks out at a swanky location or a cool holiday party hosted by friends. I think all these looks work well for now or later, and they each use current J.Hilburn styles that you may already own. I hope the ideas here will help you to create to complete new looks or inspire you to style your current pieces with a fresh eye.

Look 1
The Cranberry Wool knit by Reda could be any zip style utilizing the layering profile. This color screams holiday, and when combined with the Trinity wash denim gives this outfit a red and blue color theme, picked up by the SOK25 Red and Blue Plaid. The custom belt with the cognac accent then coordinates with the Burkett Boot in Brandy, which looks great with the denim.

Look 2
The brighter Red Currant Midweight Wool looks good with any warm neutral. In this look I combined it with the LP stretch wool and the TM70 Deep Berry Multi Gingham shirt for a stylish way to wear red. The shoe choice is a new TBNY style called Forest in the Dark Taupe Suede color way, and I think the brown belt coordinates nicely with the darker tones in the shoe.

Look 3
I think that tones of blue and navy always look stylish—you really can’t go wrong with tonal layering in shades of blue. The TM75 Navy White Windowpane shirt has a large design with white over-check, and staying true to blue in the accessory choice helps bring out the texture contrast in the tonality between the wools, cottons and leathers of the accessories.

Look 4
Olive tones are a nod to the evergreens of the season and are a nice alternative color that is a lot easier to wear than one might think. Again, the full zip in Olive wool could be any layering knit style, but this covered placket option is one of my personal favorites. The SOK32 Olive and Brown Multi Plaid has a subtle accent of gold in the pattern, lifting the design and working really nicely with the 4-way stretch pant in Tea Leaf. I added a taupe suede belt to show how it works with the Colton shoe in Grey Burnished, which has both high and low warm tones.

Look 5
The Olive Camo sportcoat really makes a statement which works great for a party. When worn back to the deeper olive wool and combined with grey in the Canclini shirt and the brushed cotton pant, this sportcoat is fashion-right with a nod to outdoors style. The brown accessories add warmth to this cool color combo and I find that the lug sole of the Quillon shoe adds to the ruggedness of the look.

Look 6
This Fawn corduroy sportcoat is truly special, with a surface luster only found in corduroy and a cloud-like hand feel due to the combination of cashmere and cotton. I love the lighter Pacific wash denim worn with the mid-blue Reda knit, styled here in a mock neck with a great snap & zip detail framing the TM80 multi check shirt. The Shelby in Brown Suede is the perfect boot with this look, and I love adding a croc belt to denim for signature high-low style that stands out.

Look 7
Velvet has the “it” factor right now, with celebs showing up at events in velvet this season, getting them noticed on red carpets. I think velvet is pretty timeless, especially worn back to black. For a cocktail hour I like to wear it with casual 5-pockets. I opted for the black Burkett boot here because of the shine and the unexpected cool factor, which adds to the overall “in-the-know” effectof the look. The SOM8 Brick Red Gingham Stretch shirt is a nice pop that accents the jacket color, though I could also have chosen any solid white or black knit to go under the velvet.
