Blurring the Lines

Okay, so I admit I am not an avid consumer of sports. As a child, my school obligated me to play Soccer three times a week, under every season of British weather, and on certain winter days, it felt like torture, so you can’t really blame me for never liking the game.

Luckily, I later learned to love other sports, including swimming, running, tennis, and Formula 1 racing, which has a renewed popularity due to the great Netflix series following the drivers and team dynamics. When I lived in Monaco, all the Formula 1 drivers of the era were neighbors, with Schumacher often spotted around my condo’s pool and Alain Prost’s yacht moored in the dock out front. The glamorous lifestyle of sports stars is as much today part of the allure of any sport as the sport itself with stars like Lewis Hamilton, Ronaldo, and Tiger Woods doing as much for the “Style of Sport” as for the sport they master.

Sports apparel and footwear are as much a part of the modern wardrobe as ever, with the advancement of high-tech, stretch fabrics leading the pathway to comfort and dynamic wear that is easily transferred to modern lifestyles. Technology has been leading the way for hybrid style that crosses over between technical sport and everyday wear and today touches many categories. Just think of our bestselling pant, the four-way stretch, with its knitted technique and high-spun poly-based composition. Previously, this fabric would be relegated to specific styles, but shown as a pant fabric, this technology opens up possibilities that clients are loving and leaning into more and more.

Our Hybrid Blazer is a style that can be worn easily as a sportscoat replacement. It is completely unconstructed in knit fabrications and wears more like a cardigan with extreme comfort and ease. This makes it a great travel companion, easily folded and packed if needed. Some guys prefer the look of this hybrid piece with just a nod to tailoring, as it looks more in the know, youthful, and modern than the traditionally tailored sportscoat.

With the golf season kicking off in most parts of the country, we offer custom-made golf attire exclusively at J.Hilburn. Our golf styles and options are designed to give those players all the tech grip, wicking, breathability, and movement needed for the game itself. We pride ourselves in offering an off-the-course style that fits into any casual lifestyle outside the club. Many of our clients love to play golf, but it can also be a great place to find new clients; with a plethora of brands servicing the sport, our value in custom is only a small premium for custom-made clothing and personalized golf gear that I think many golf enthusiasts would enjoy.

This multi-lifestyle appeal extends to polos, too, with our Italian prints on tech stretch fabrics that are similar to qualities you may find in luxury sports brands, with the line between knit and woven technology blurred in an array of hybrid fabric categories. Our Canclini shirting fabric is offered in both shirts and knits in the same fabrics due to this quality crossing over between the two. In polos and knits, it is perfectly understandable as an extra fine knit that drapes and performs as such; still, more and more clients are discovering this fabric as a great shirt quality that looks modern and feels less traditional than a classic dress shirt. Whilst not for everyone, this and all our more hybrid qualities continue to update and serve modern men’s needs and lifestyles.

With pull-on shorts, jogger styles, and endless options across our collections, the lines between sporty and every day are more blurred than ever, giving us all more and more opportunities to address and dress better for our client’s modern lifestyles.
